About
Quotometry measures the part before it prices it
The name joins quote and -metry, measurement, because every price here starts from measuring the part. That includes the parts of a price that most calculators leave out.
The problem we kept running into
Manufacturing shops quote by hand because the alternatives are worse. The spreadsheet is approximately right and everybody has their own copy. The marketplace quotes instantly and takes a share of the job and the customer relationship. The off-the-shelf calculators are volume times a number, which is fine until it is not, and the shop is the one who finds out.
Meanwhile the buyer sends the same file to three shops, and whoever answers first wins. That is a real commercial disadvantage for careful shops, and it should not be.
Three decisions everything else follows from
Analyse once, price many
A file is measured once into an immutable set of facts, and every configuration, every process and every option is priced from those same facts. That is why re-pricing is instant; a file is measured again only when a process needs a measurement it does not have yet.
Configuration is versioned data
Your machines, materials, rates and rules are a document with versions, not settings in a database somebody can change under you. A quote references the version that priced it, so it explains itself years later.
Every process is a plug-in
FDM physics lives with FDM, powder physics with powder. No shared “multiply by a factor” layer that slowly becomes nobody’s responsibility and everybody’s bug.
The commitments that cost us things
- We do not take a percentage of your orders. You are quoting your own customers on your own site.
- We do not own your customer relationship. The widget is on your page, in your colours, and the buyer is yours.
- We do not use your files for anything but quoting them. Not training, not benchmarks, not examples.
- We do not ship a process we cannot price honestly. 13 are priced today, and the ones that need a person’s judgement, such as metal and injection moulding, go to the shop’s review by default; sheet metal fabrication and cnc routing are not built and say so on their own pages.
- We do not claim certifications we do not have. The security page lists what we do not claim as prominently as what we do.
Boring in the places that matter
The engine is Rust, and the parts that compute prices are pure functions with no clock, no randomness and no I/O - so the same inputs give the same price, in a test, in production, and in the report that explains a quote from March. Money is integer minor units end to end, and the arithmetic on it is decimal, never floating point.
Mesh geometry is written in-house, with no third-party geometry library; STEP files are read by an open-source CAD kernel in a separate, supervised process. Every architectural decision that was not obvious is written down as a dated record in the repository, including the ones we later changed our minds about.
Private beta
We are looking for a small number of shops who are willing to tell us when something is wrong. If that sounds like you, we would like to talk.
