3D printing cost calculator
The price of a printed part, line by line: material with its waste, machine time at your rate, labour, finishing, the prints that fail, and your margin.
Read how the numbers work.
How to calculate 3D printing cost, for any process
A 3D printing cost is six lines: material, machine time, labour, post-processing, failures and overhead. How to work out each one, with FDM and SLS examples.
Knowledge baseFDM print time estimation: why volume does not predict it
Two FDM parts with the same volume can take very different times to print. What really sets print time: perimeters, infill, layers, acceleration and travel.
Knowledge baseMargin vs markup for manufacturers, with a conversion table
Markup is a share of cost, margin a share of price. The formulas, a conversion table, and the mistakes that quietly cost a manufacturer a few points on every job.
About this calculator.
Why add failed prints as a cost?
Because every failed print is paid for by the ones that succeed. At a 5 % failure rate, each good part has to carry about 5.3 % more direct cost, which is what the failed-prints line adds.
Is margin the same as markup?
No. A 30 % margin means profit is 30 % of the price; the equivalent markup on cost is about 43 %. This calculator uses margin, which is how most shops think about profit on the invoice.
How do I estimate print time without slicing?
For a quote, slicing every file by hand is slow. Volume alone does not predict time; walls, infill and layer count do. Instant quoting software estimates those from the geometry so every option can be priced in seconds.
