CNC milling machine guide
Every setting that lives on a CNC milling machine - what it is, what it does to a price, and what a typical value looks like. This mirrors the machine editor field for field.
A machine in Quotometry is a real machine in your shop. It carries its own hourly rate, its own build volume and its own speeds, and a part is priced on the machine it would actually run on - not on an average of everything you own.
You can have as many as your plan allows, and several configurations can share them through the Library. If you buy another one of the same model, copy it and change the name.
Every setting on this page
These are in the same order as the editor, with the same help text. Each one has an anchor, and the ? beside a field in your console links straight to it - so if you are reading this because you clicked one, the setting you were looking at is highlighted.
Machine: kind, rates and limits
Machine kindkindbasic
What the machine can reach without re-clamping. The build volume is its X / Y / Z travel.
Price: Fewer set-ups on 3+2 and 5-axis; undercuts are only reachable there.
Typical: 3-axis.
Materials it cutsgroups
The machinability groups this machine is suited to.
Price: A material whose group is not ticked is never quoted on this machine; if no machine cuts it, the material is not offered.
Typical: all groups on a machining centre; no titanium or stainless on a light mill.
Roughing rate factormrr_factorbasiccalibratable
Roughing speed relative to a typical 30-taper vertical machining centre (1.0).
Price: Divides roughing time: a stiff 40-taper machine at 1.3 roughs 30 % faster.
Typical: 0.3 hobby mill · 1.0 VMC · 1.3 heavy VMC.
This is one of the numbers the calibration tool can fit from jobs you have already run, so you do not have to guess it.
Finishing feed factorfeed_factorcalibratable
Finishing and drilling speed relative to a typical machining centre (1.0).
Price: Divides finishing and drilling time.
Typical: 0.6-1.5.
This is one of the numbers the calibration tool can fit from jobs you have already run, so you do not have to guess it.
Tool changetool_change_s
Chip-to-chip tool change time.
Price: Multiplied by the tools per set-up and the set-ups, per part.
Typical: 1.5 s (drill-tap centre) to 8 s.
Table load (0 = unchecked)max_table_load_kg
Heaviest stock the table or trunnion carries.
Price: Heavier stock is never quoted on this machine.
Typical: 100-1 000 kg.
Smallest end millmin_tool_mm
The smallest end mill you run on this machine.
Price: No direct price effect: an internal radius smaller than half of it cannot be cut (DFM `small_internal_radius`).
Typical: 1-3 mm.
