MJF / SAF material guide

Every setting that lives on a MJF / SAF material, and where each number comes from - usually a supplier's data sheet or an invoice.

A material is something you buy, so most of these numbers are on an invoice or a data sheet rather than in your head. Price and density are the two that matter most; get those right and everything else is a refinement.

Materials live in the Library too, so a price change is one edit even if five configurations use it.

Every setting on this page

These are in the same order as the editor, with the same help text. Each one has an anchor, and the ? beside a field in your console links straight to it - so if you are reading this because you clicked one, the setting you were looking at is highlighted.

Powder

Refresh ratiorefresh_ratio_pctbasic

percentageDefault: 35

Virgin powder required per build.

Price: Unsintered powder × refresh ratio is waste charged by build share.

Typical: 30–50 % (SLS PA12), 20 % (MJF PA12).

Bulk (loose) densitybulk_density_g_cm3

number (g/cm³)Default: 0.45

The density of loose powder in the cake, which is much lower than the density of the sintered part.

Price: Decides how much powder a build consumes, and therefore how much unsintered powder there is to refresh and charge for.

Typical: 0.4–0.5 g/cm³.

Minimum wallmin_wall_mm

number (mm)Default: 0.8

Thinnest wall that will survive de-powdering in this material.

Price: No direct price effect - it is the threshold for the thin-wall warning, and it is the check that saves you a remake.

Typical: 0.7–1 mm.

Minimum clearancemin_clearance_mm

number (mm)Default: 0.5

Smallest gap between two surfaces that will still come apart.

Price: No direct price effect - below it, moving parts fuse and assemblies arrive as one piece.

Typical: 0.4–0.6 mm.

Minimum escape holemin_escape_hole_mm

number (mm)Default: 3

Smallest hole through which trapped powder can actually be removed.

Price: No direct price effect - a cavity without one keeps powder you paid for and a part you cannot certify.

Typical: 3–5 mm.

Warp review abovemax_length_warp_mm

number (mm)Default: 250

Above this length a part is sent for review rather than quoted.

Price: No direct price effect - long flat parts warp in a powder bed, and this puts them in front of a person first.

Typical: 200–300 mm.

Thick section abovethick_section_mm

number (mm)Default: 20

Above this thickness a section is flagged as at risk of sinking or distorting.

Price: No direct price effect - it is a DFM warning, and a hint to the buyer to hollow or rib the part.

Typical: 15–25 mm.

Depowdering effortdepowder_factor_pct

percentageDefault: 100

How much harder this material is to clean than your baseline, as a percentage.

Price: Scales the de-powdering minutes for every part in this material. Over 100 % for materials that hold powder in their surface.

Typical: 100 %.
